Erectile Dysfunction in young men

May 1, 2014 By Charlene Lewis

Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

Men over the age of 50 most commonly experience erectile dysfunction (ED). However, new studies and surveys show that erectile dysfunction also affects young men, and as many as 25% of men with ED are under the age of 40. Since many young men deal with this problem, it’s essential to learn about the potential causes of ED in younger men.

Erectile Dysfunction – What is It?

What is erectile dysfunction? Some men equate it with premature ejaculation, but the two are very different. ED is the inability to achieve or keep an erection that is hard enough for intercourse, or the inability to produce an erection long enough for satisfying intercourse. Premature ejaculation is different and involves ejaculating within a couple minutes of starting intercourse, but it does not include a problem getting an erection. [1]

Common Causes of ED in Young Men

Understanding the causes of ED helps men and their physicians find ways to remedy the problem. The following are some of the most common causes of this problem among young men.

  • Physical Causes – Certain physical problems may cause erectile dysfunction. For example, diseases like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure may cause the problem. Poor dietary habits, a sedentary lifestyle and obesity may cause diseases that result in ED. [2] In fact, studies show that many obese men may be able to eliminate problems with erectile dysfunction by losing 10-15% of their body weight.

  • Lifestyle Causes – Lifestyle choices may result in ED as well. For example, young men who use or abuse alcohol and/or recreational drugs may suffer from this problem. In some cases, blood vessels may be damaged due to substance abuse. Substance abuse may also cause reduced sensations, making arousal more difficult. Smoking may also increase the chance of ED in young men.

  • Psychological Causes – Sometimes the causes of erectile dysfunction may be psychological. For example, some men have problems with ED due to anxiety, relationship issues, or even post-traumatic stress disorder. Other psychological causes include stress, insomnia and depression. [3] Excessive use of porn may also cause psychological problems among young men that result in problems with erectile dysfunction. [4]

Erectile dysfunction in young men is a problem that should be discussed with a physician. If you experience problems with ED, be sure to talk to your doctor. In some cases, ED may be a sign of other, serious conditions. By talking to your physician, you may be able to find a treatment for the problem.
